Bombay International Food Market.

It’s not a food market.  It’s more like a corner store/head shop tucked inside Epcot Germany on the corner of Bardstown Road and Bonnycastle.  Here’s the basic math:

EQUALS (=) Bombay International Food Market

In fact, some days when I go in there, it’s plain creepy…but creepy in a fun “what will happen - is anyone even here” way.  It’s funny: they own the liquor store next to it, and only recently did I figure out that when I go inside of the convenience store and I think I’m alone, there’s a worker going back and forth from liquor to convenience store, all the while watching me on camera.

image

But no matter how many times I have gone there and have literally crawled on my hands and knees to get a $1 can of Coke out from the VERY back of the bottom shelf of their freezer, one thing keeps bringing me back.  Homemade samosas.

image

If you’re lucky…and this is usually between 2:30 - 4 PM…they have a box with tongs and vegetarian samosas on sale for $2 each.  I LOVE them.  They are filled with Indian spices, potatoes, and peas.  They make the best romantic snacks with the person, place, or thing that you love.

The long and short of it: go have a Samosa.  Buy one for a date, take a walk, and please your palates.  But be forewarned.  It’s an interesting scene in that not-an-international-food-market.

It's finally cold outside.

I like this wonky, sunny/rainy, seasons changing cold.  It makes me appreciate warm blankets, little dogs, husband beards, playing with my new phone/camera, and the interior of our home.  2 interior things that made my happy this evening:

I also love the way my husband displays his toys and books:

(note - my husband painted the horror models when he was a boy)

Although the weekend has highs in the 60’s, coats, scarves, fingerless gloves, and soup make me happy to live in a place where the seasons change.  I’m excited to have KY holiday adventures!

Pita Delights.

Once we went to Pita Delights because we didn’t know what to buy from the ValuMarket, so Berns just pulled into the sweet little blue house of a restaurant on a whim.  It was 8:30 PM, we were hungry and cranky, and their food did just the trick.

On rainy days like today, I sit and dream of their hummus.

image

The menu is very reasonable - I think I paid $9 for a plate with veggie basamati rice, a little salad, and a kick-ass lamb gyro.  Ever since that night of hunger, Bern and I go there for their warming food and calming atmosphere.

You should go there.  Tonight.  Because it’s raining.

The Makery

There’s a lot going on this weekend!  Friends will be in town, new stores are opening, and there is a [M]akery - Mature Audience Art & Craft Show that I plan on going to with friends this weekend.  I’m excited, just because the last time we were supposedly going to a graphic/crude art show in Charleston, it sucked as much as the bar it was in (Joe Pasta’s upstairs level).  I’m excited that Louisville shows more promise to a suggestive evening.

Here’s the skinny:

Louisville toys.

My husband has a dream. He wants to make designer toys, and as of late he’s been hand roto-casting them in our backyard.  Believe me, it’s a better workout than the Shake Weight!  Check out his mold and process here.  Below is his lady monster “Shedorah” flanked by color test skull heads.  I can’t wait for him to get his ETSY site up and running!  Needless to say…I’m all wifin’ proud.  We’re gearing up for WonderFest!

My Girlfriends 18th birthday is Nov 14th. I need birthday ideas to do that weekend from friday afternoon through sunday. any cool places i should take her too or unique birthday ideas that are cheap (me being a broke college student)?

Birthday dinner:  My husband and I went to Ramsi’s Cafe and spent about $75 (tip included) on 1 app, 2 entrees, 4 fancy drinks, and dessert - we felt like we were livin’ large and the end price wasn’t too bad.  Since she’s 18, I’m assuming you won’t have the mandatory drink expense, so it shouldn’t be too bad…

Cheaper?

Zen Garden has a chef special for 13.95 for a 3 course dinner and 8.95 for the exact same meal just at lunch.  It’s healthy vegetarian food.  AMAZING.

Cheaper?

Take her for a walk down Bardstown Rd. to get a slice at Papalinos Pizza.   Slices are $3 each.  Just watch out for expensive toppings - that’s how they get you.  The pizza is great.  Then walk her to a movie at Baxter Ave. Theatre.

Saturday:

Brunch takes care of 2 meals.  Hillbilly Tea is pretty darn amazing.  Check the menu prices.  I recommend going at 11am because that’s when you can get breakfast or lunch.  The crowds come in at 12.  Everything is good there.  Get some sweets for celebration.

OR…

Take her to ol’ Joe Devola’s for lunch.  We spent $19 (20% tip included) for lunch, which included one big sandwich and a tea for Bern, one bowl of soup, half sandwich, and tea for me (cookies included).

To do?  Check out your town.

The Speed Museum is free and they have the Bristol Cafe inside.  Go see art (romance!) and get some green chili wontons for a snack.

You COULD (if you enjoy junking) go to The Crazy Daisy and check out cool antiques.  It’s a nice place to just look at STUFF.

OR…

you could go see different Louisville Roadside attractions.  Include Indiana.  Check out the Roadside America website.  Search Louisville and close cities in IN.  See the Colonel’s grave, the junkhouse on Frankfort, the dog that is mayor in a small town in Indy, Butt Drugs…the list goes on and on.

And Sunday?

Check out local vintage stores.  The Deal, Knitty Gritty, the new place across the street, etc…all on Barret Avenue…that’s a fun day to look at things.  I wouldn’t go to Lynn’s because it’s overpriced and too busy on weekends, but you could check out The Fish House and Cafe Beignet on Winter Ave (right down the street) instead.  Go for a coffee and beignet.

I hope this all helps!  I love birthdays!

Joe Davola's

image

I like soup…maybe more than sandwiches.  This summer when we were moving apartments from the first Highlands place we got to our current Old Louisville digs, we ate at Joe Devola’s every day.  It was cheap, easy, fast, and even in the dead heat of summer they had this kick-ass cauliflower soup.  I ate it every time we went, even if it was 100 degrees.

image

Now that it’s finally getting cold, I’m getting all cravey for this amazing cauliflower and cheese delicious bowl of hot, yummy goodness.  Can you taste it?  I kid you not, if you go to Joe Devola’s with me, even if you eat this Mad Maple Baked Turkey (Turkey, apricot aioli, Swiss cheese, lettuce, tomato) sandwich…

image

drink the best tea  ROOIBIEE RED TEA ever (watermelon and mint) and the free bag-O-cookies you always get for ordering (a nice touch if you ask me)…

image

you will STILL become jealous of my cauliflower soup, order a bowl with your full tummy…

image

and then you’ll eventually give me your awesome soup leftovers.  At least, that’s what THIS guy did today:

image

I’m a serious fan of ordering from Joe Davola’s (they’re quick, you can email your lunch order on their website the day before, and they have attractive employees that make and bring your order) or eating in their comfy-cozy sit-down area.

image

There’s something about an open screen door that makes me feel happy as a clam.

By the by, I’m a big fan of the Psycho Savory Roast Beef (Roast beef with Horseradish mayonnaise, caramelized onions, lettuce, tomato):

image

I’m pretty sure everything they have is great.  One of the neat things is that you can get a 1/2 and 1/2 combo of anything - you can mix a sandwich if you can’t decide…you can get a 1/2 sammy and bowl of soup or a salad…I just love all of the options.  I’ve also decided that of all the sandwich makers/small business owners I’ve ever had the pleasure of speaking with, the owner has the best accent ever.  It’s silky.  It makes me want to order lots of food.

So.  Go to Joe Davola’s.  Eat the food.  Hear a nice accent.  Sit, sip tea, and enjoy being alive.  They have plenty of soup, salad, and sandwiches to choose from.

Hey, very nice tumblr! Its wonderfully thorough! Do you write for the Leo or what?

I do not, but I’m totally flattered because I enjoy reading the Leo.  I’m just new to Louisville, and when I was researching what to do when I got here, I didn’t find much.  That’s how this blog was “birthed”, so to speak.  Thanks for reading!  If you know any cool places to go, let me know.
